Halal is most commonly associated with food and drink. It dictates what is permissible for Muslims to eat, with key restrictions including pork and alcohol.
Halal meat requires specific methods of slaughter, known as dhabiha, which involve a swift cut to the jugular vein, carotid artery, and windpipe of an animal that is alive and healthy at the time of slaughter.
While often associated with food, halal also encompasses other aspects of life, including business practices, ethics, and even cosmetics and pharmaceuticals.
The opposite of halal is haram, which means forbidden or unlawful. Anything that does not meet halal guidelines is considered haram.
Halal is defined by Islamic law, which includes the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (Hadith).
